Isn’t it a joy to have the new stretch of Candlet Road, complete with the roundabout, open after so many weeks? So there’s no more having to remember that we can’t use our normal routes out of the town, or face long queues whichever route we take, and traffic clogging up the roads in and out of the town.
This got me thinking about roads, ways and paths in the Bible. Some immediately come to mind: the road to Emmaus where the two grieving disciples walked with Jesus, but were so grief stricken following the crucifixion that they failed to recognise the risen Lord walking with them until that wonderful moment when he shared a meal with them; the Damascus road on which Paul had such an astonishing and life-changing encounter with God, an encounter which would have such an impact on the Christian faith for all time and all believers; the roadside where blind Bartimaeus sat begging day after day until that moment when Jesus stopped and asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?”
But perhaps the most important reference is when Jesus says of himself “I AM THE WAY and the truth and the life” (John 14:6). Wherever our journeys might take us geographically, if we are walking with Jesus, following in his footsteps and sharing our joys, our sorrows, frustrations and burdens with him, then we’re on the right road.
